  • President Trump signed a resolution to reopen the government following a six-week shutdown.
  • Democrats were blamed for causing the shutdown and blocking funding measures.
  • The resolution funds key departments, brings back pay, but drops demanded subsidies.

President Trump has signed a measure to reopen the federal government after a lengthy 42-day shutdown. The move brings relief to furloughed federal workers and gets normal operations running again.

The Senate approved the resolution on Monday, and the House followed suit Wednesday evening. This keeps the government funded through January 30, while military construction, Veterans Affairs, the Department of Agriculture, and Congress get extended support until September 30.

Trump criticized Democrats for dragging out the shutdown and urged voters to hold them accountable next election.

“Republicans never wanted a shutdown and voted 15 times for a clean continuation of funding,” Trump said.

“The Democrats shutdown has inflicted massive harm … So I just want to tell the American people, you should not forget this when we come up to midterms and other things. Don’t forget what they’ve done to our country.”

Federal workers affected during the shutdown will receive backpay and jobs return, but no extra subsidies for the Affordable Care Act were included. Those subsidies still face expiration at the end of the year, despite persistent Democrat demands.

Trump called for Congress to end the filibuster and said the government should never be forced shut again.

“So with my signature, the federal government will now resume normal operations, and my administration and our partners in Congress will continue our work to lower the cost of living, restore public safety, grow our economy and make America affordable again, for all Americans again,” the president declared.
