Wyatt’s Take

  • Malik Nabers shocked everyone by participating in full practice at Giants training camp after suffering a catastrophic knee injury last season
  • The 2024 first-round pick underwent two surgeries and faced serious doubts about his Week 1 availability — now he’s running routes and catching passes
  • New head coach John Harbaugh and the entire organization are thrilled to see their young star back on the field in West Virginia

New York Giants fans got the surprise of their lives Wednesday when Malik Nabers took the field for a full practice session. The young receiver, who went down with a brutal knee injury in Week 4 last season, looked sharp and healthy according to new head coach John Harbaugh.

“He looked good,” Harbaugh said after watching Nabers run routes at The Greenbrier in West Virginia.

This wasn’t just any injury recovery. Nabers suffered both an ACL tear and a complete meniscus tear after leaping for a pass from quarterback Jaxson Dart in his first career start. The MetLife Stadium crowd went silent as Nabers clutched his knee and had to be carted off the field.

The injury required surgery, but complications followed. Swelling delayed the initial procedure, and Nabers needed a second surgery this spring to remove scar tissue and address stiffness in the same knee.

With two surgeries under his belt and months of rehab, nobody knew if the 2024 first-rounder would be ready for Week 1 — or even the first few weeks of the season. But there he was Wednesday, running full speed alongside his teammates on day one of training camp.

General manager Joe Schoen couldn’t hide his excitement about seeing Nabers back in action.

“We’ve got a really good plan for him,” Schoen said. “The medical staff has a really good plan for him, and we’re going to always say listen to the patients. So, we’re going to see how he reacts. We got a good plan in place, so as long as everything goes as planned, we’ll listen to Malik and his body. And, again, hopefully he’ll be ready and we’ll see how it plays out. But no predictions right now, just because we have a long way to go. Still a lot of camp.”

Nabers spent the summer in New Jersey working closely with the Giants’ medical team on his recovery. The fact that his injury happened early in the season gave the organization hope he could be ready for opening day. Not placing him on the physically unable to perform list at the start of camp was the first sign things were progressing well.

Dart, who threw to Nabers on Wednesday, was thrilled to have his top target back on the field — especially on Nabers’ 23rd birthday.

“He definitely has a presence about him,” Dart said of Nabers. “There’s an aura that he has on the field that is exhilarating. It makes me happy. It makes everybody happy just to see him out there. I think for him, he’s had a lot of positives. We’re just going to continue to get him in slowly. He’s doing a great job with how he’s attacking his recovery. I’ve got all the confidence in the world in him and his approach to the game, how much he’s missed being out there with the guys. I think it’s definitely, for him — I don’t want to speak for him too much, but I just think it’s a really good feeling for him to just be out there with the team and to be involved.”

The Giants are being smart about Nabers’ return, monitoring his body’s response to the workload and adjusting as needed. But seeing him participate fully on day one of camp is a massive positive sign for a franchise desperately needing playmakers on offense.

Why It Matters

This is what grit and determination look like. Nabers could’ve taken the easy route and sat out longer, but he worked his tail off all summer to get back with his team. That’s the kind of attitude that builds winning organizations — not excuses, not quitting, just hard work and results. Giants fans have every reason to be excited about this kid’s future.
