The American Red Cross has declared a second national blood crisis in 2025, warning that supply levels have fallen to dangerous lows even as thousands of patriotic Americans continue to roll up their sleeves.

The shortage is particularly severe for type O+ blood — the most commonly needed type in emergencies — with supplies dropping below a single day’s worth. That means hospitals across the country are operating on razor-thin margins when it comes to treating trauma victims, surgery patients, and those battling serious illnesses.

Summer months traditionally see a spike in demand as more accidents occur and trauma cases increase, but donation rates haven’t kept pace. The Red Cross is calling on healthy Americans to make time to donate, emphasizing that each donation can save up to three lives.

Blood donations are essential for everything from car accident victims to cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Without adequate supplies, hospitals may be forced to delay critical procedures or ration blood products — decisions that could cost American lives.
