The Trump administration is taking a hard look at the American Medical Association’s control over the medical billing code system that every doctor in America must use to get paid.

The AMA owns and operates the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) coding system—the only game in town when it comes to billing insurance companies and Medicare. Every physician has to license these codes from the AMA, generating massive revenue for the organization while giving them unprecedented control over American healthcare.
