Wyatt’s Take

  • Texans are wary of promises about the power grid’s reliability.
  • Legislative reforms aim to prevent a repeat of the 2021 disaster.
  • Recent cold snaps have not matched the harshness of Winter Storm Uri.

Texans still remember the blackouts from 2021’s Winter Storm Uri, when the power grid failed in brutal cold. Officials at ERCOT claim they’re ready for this winter’s threat, but trust is hard-won after past failures.

Forecasts predict a tough week ahead with worsening conditions that look a lot like what led up to Uri. Back then, the outlook kept getting worse, and ERCOT’s optimism turned out to be misplaced.

“No worries, said ERCOT, the grid can handle it. That, of course, turned out not to be true. Not at all.”

During Uri, wind and solar dropped off first when power was most needed, then freezing knocked natural gas power offline because rolling blackouts didn’t account for critical infrastructure. Over 300 lives were lost to the days-long outages.

This time, grid managers point to new rules and more generation capacity as reasons for hope. Reforms since 2021 require essential natural gas systems to be identified and kept powered during emergencies. Plants now must winterize equipment, fixing some issues that led to the blackout disaster before.

Recent winter storms in 2024 and 2025 didn’t cause outages or deaths, giving ERCOT confidence in the new system. Still, experts warn the upcoming storm could be harsher than those tests.

While the grid is stronger and better prepared, folks are wise to stay cautious and keep backup plans ready just in case.

Stay alert, Texas. Watch out for your family and neighbors, and make sure you’re ready for bad weather. Let’s hope the lights stay on this time.

Wyatt Matters
