  • One of the girls who stabbed a classmate in the ‘Slender Man’ case escaped from her group home in Madison, Wisconsin.
  • Experts say Morgan Geyser was not ready to be released and her escape raises safety concerns for the public.
  • This case highlights problems with the mental health and justice systems.

Body camera footage captured police confronting Morgan Geyser after she left her group home in Madison, Wisconsin. Geyser was convicted for stabbing her sixth-grade classmate in 2014, inspired by the made-up Slender Man character.

Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weier, both 12 at the time, lured Payton Leutner to a park and stabbed her 19 times. Leutner survived, and both attackers admitted they thought it would make them Slender Man’s servants.

“Internet mythology, like Slender Man, can contribute to distorted perceptions of reality, as it did in this case,” Dr. Carole Lieberman said.

Geyser pleaded guilty and was placed in a psychiatric institution in 2018. Judges released her to a group home after doctors testified she made progress, but some warned she was not fully rehabilitated. Weier was released earlier and now lives with her father, wearing a GPS monitor.

The decision for Geyser’s release followed testimony from doctors, but some—including Dr. Lieberman—disagreed. “Geyser should never have been released from the psychiatric hospital she was in…there were many signs that her schizophrenia had not been sufficiently treated.”

Less than a year after moving to the group home, Geyser removed her GPS monitor and escaped. She was last seen with a male companion on the night of November 22. Police later found and detained her outside Wisconsin.

This escape calls into question whether the system protects the public or the patients more.
