January 1, McDonald’s Unveils New Technology That Could Replace Thousands of Workers

McDonald’s unveiled a test restaurant in Texas, complete with new automation technology that replaces many positions previously held by workers. The move has sparked mixed reactions across the political spectrum.

The fast food giant announced that customers can now use The Order Ahead Lane, a separate Drive Thru lane where customers who order through the app can receive their orders via a food and beverage conveyor belt.

“At McDonald’s, we’ve been setting the standard for Drive Thrus for more than 45 years,” said Max Carmona, McDonald’s Senior Director, Global Design & Restaurant Development. “As our customers’ needs continue to change, we are committed to finding new ways to serve them faster and easier than ever before.”

Additionally, customers can use kiosks and the mobile app to grab their orders, rather than dealing with staff.

“The technology in this restaurant not only allows us to serve our customers in new, innovative ways, it gives our restaurant team the ability to concentrate more on order speed and accuracy, which makes the experience more enjoyable for everyone,” franchisee Keith Vanecek said in a press release.

Conservative commentators noted that the new technology comes after a push for a higher minimum wage.

“The real minimum wage is zero and you are always replaceable,” BASEDPolitics President Hannah Cox tweeted. “If you want more money find a way to add more value. Anyone telling you differently has no idea how to eradicate poverty.”

Meanwhile, the activist group Fight for 15 — which advocates for a $15 per hour minimum wage — said the new technology shows that workers “need to demand” a higher minimum wage.

“Maybe it’s time for broad worker solidarity so we can fight back,” the group tweeted.

The liberal agenda at its best. Politicians do not care about consequences of their actions and people don’t not see the stupidity of politicians actions.

    Need I go on?

These people are completely entitled low IQ idiots – go get a real job if you want more money, and quit making a career out taking entry level jobs from teenagers looking for their 1st job.

As a McDonald’s customer for almost 60 years, I can tell you this is McDonald’s biggest issue: inconsistency. For better or worse, historically McDonald’s biggest competitive advantage is customers knew exactly what to expect when they went to McDonald’s.

    No longer true.

Nowadays, you order in from the kiosks, sit down with your table number tent, and don’t know what to expect. Will they deliver the food to your table as the kiosk promised? Maybe. yes, maybe not. They might call out your tent number from the counter and expect you to pick it up. They might call out your order number (not your tent number) and expect you to pick it up. They might put one of those numbers up on the pick-up flat screen over the counter and let your food go cold hoping somebody comes and picks it up. Your order might not have your drink, or the sauces you ordered. You might be given an empty cup with or without a straw. Other things with your order are likely to be wrong a good percentage of the time. …and guess what? I’ve seen all of the above at the SAME McDonald’s location. You just don’t know what to expect day-to-day.

10 years ago I told my college level programming students that you need to get an education because when $15 becomes the minimum wage, jobs in the fast food industry will be gone. It is $14.20 in NYS and they are talking about raising it up to $25 an hour.
