Wyatt’s Take

  • The FAA reduced mandatory flight cuts at major airports from 6% to 3% as government operations restart.
  • Airlines have largely ignored earlier cut orders and say bigger cuts aren’t needed.
  • Air traffic controllers are still working long hours with short staffing.

The Federal Aviation Administration is letting airlines fly more routes as government operations return to normal. Starting Saturday, airlines now only need to cut 3% of flights at 40 big airports, down from 6%.

Airlines had not been following the previous cut, and officials say some plan to make few or no reductions this weekend. The FAA says it will keep an eye on how things run and make changes if needed.

“The 3% reduction will remain in place while the FAA monitors system performance throughout the weekend and evaluates whether normal operations can resume,” the agency stated.

Flight cancellations dropped to 2% on Friday, thanks in part to air traffic controllers and other FAA employees getting most of their owed back pay. The FAA says it’s still short about 3,500 controllers, and many are working six-day weeks to keep things moving.

During the shutdown, air traffic absences led to thousands of delays and cancellations, making travel tough for regular folks. Congress reopened the government after 43 days and that helped clear up many delays.

Some lawmakers are now asking for more details about safety during this time. United Airlines said it canceled almost 3% of flights Friday, which is lower than earlier in the week.

Keep an eye on how these flight changes shake out and what it means for your travels. Stay tuned for more updates that matter to your family and your wallet.
