Wyatt’s Take

  • The Senate is set to vote on stopping more U.S. military moves in Venezuela unless Congress says yes.
  • Trump’s raid captured Maduro but caused major debate in Washington.
  • Some Republicans may join Democrats to back this war powers push.

Senators will vote on a plan to block President Trump from taking extra military steps in Venezuela unless Congress gives the go-ahead. Supporters say only Congress should have the final word, making sure Americans and lawmakers know the risks.

The measure comes after U.S. troops captured former Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro during a January raid in Caracas. That operation, which also nabbed his wife and resulted in injuries and deaths, has split lawmakers on party lines.

Republicans mostly call it a law enforcement job, not a war. Democrats say it’s military action and want rules. The resolution urges President Trump to end U.S. military activity in Venezuela unless Congress declares war or passes a special law.

Some GOP senators like Lisa Murkowski, Susan Collins, and Josh Hawley might side with Democrats. But with Republicans holding the Senate, the measure faces an uphill battle. Trump could still veto it, needing a big override to become law.

Under the War Powers Act, the president must tell Congress about using troops and get approval within 60 days. Trump and top Republicans say the law doesn’t apply here, arguing this was about law enforcement, not war.

The debate shows just how divided Congress is on using U.S. troops abroad, especially with dangerous global alliances at play. If this vote fails, more like it could be coming soon.
