January 1, Nike’s Workforce Faces More Cuts Amid a Growth Push

Wyatt’s Take
- Nike is laying off nearly 1,400 workers across its global operations.
- The company says the cuts are meant to make the business faster, leaner, and more efficient.
- Executives are shifting more investment toward Oregon and India as the brand tries to rebuild momentum.
Nike is cutting 1,400 jobs across its global operations as the company struggles to keep up with rising competition. This restructuring hits workers in North America and overseas as corporate leaders try to fix a massive decline in stock value.
Chief Operating Officer Venkatesh Alagirisamy told employees that these cuts are part of a plan to simplify the business model.
He says the company is building a foundation for long-term growth by using more automation.
“Across the company, we have been taking deliberate steps to strengthen our foundation, sharpen how we compete, and build a model designed to deliver long-term profitable growth,” Alagirisamy stated.
The footwear giant is focusing its remaining investments on its Oregon headquarters and a technology center in India. CEO Elliott Hill is currently trying to pivot the brand back toward its core sports products to win back customers.
“Some of that work is happening now and more will continue over time as we align our teams, capabilities, and footprint to the future needs of the company,” Alagirisamy continued.
While executives talk about efficiency and automation, the reality is that another major household name is failing to deliver for its shareholders and workers. Middle America sees another example of a massive corporation prioritizing its bottom line after years of losing its way.
