January 1, Rising Star Eyes Major League Title Shot After Big Challenge

Wyatt’s Take
- Trevor Lee is making the most of his new MLW contract by taking on one of the best wrestlers in the world.
- This fight is a real chance for an American wrestler to prove himself against the top foreign competition.
- Hard work and grit still matter when a man steps into the ring against the best.
Trevor Lee signed with Major League Wrestling seven months ago and has been fighting hard ever since. He has already faced some of the toughest men in the company and holds the MLW Southern Crown Championship.
Lee will step into the ring this weekend at Saturday Night SuperFight against Yota Tsuji, the IWGP heavyweight champion from New Japan Pro-Wrestling. The match is not for the title, but a win could put Lee in line for a shot at that championship.
“I think it’s been going great,” Lee told OutKick Dropkick of his time with MLW so far. “I think with the last time we spoke, I probably said something along the lines of, I just want to go out there and show what I can do, and I feel like over these past few months, I’ve had the capability to do that. I think that we’re gonna be looking at even more opportunity coming this Saturday when I wrestle Yota. I mean, I couldn’t ask for a better opportunity, right? The IWGP heavyweight champion. I’m looking at this match like kind of like a job interview, right? And, what a way to, what a way to try to start it out.”
Lee was the one who called out Tsuji for this fight at one of MLW’s biggest shows of the year. Tsuji has held the IWGP heavyweight title twice and several other top belts in Japan.
“I wanna show that I’m ready for that opportunity and if we’re gonna bring these guys in and we’re gonna highlight these guys as being the top guys that they truly are, Yota is the top of the top at New Japan,” he continued. “So, if he’s gonna come over here and he’s gonna ask for a fight, then, you know, I’m looking for an opportunity. And I told you that right the last time we spoke, that I’m just wanting opportunities and what bigger opportunity.”
Lee says he is ready to wrestle for New Japan and hopes a strong showing Saturday will open that door. He has never competed in Japan before.
“One-hundred percent,” he said. “I’d love to wrestle for New Japan. I’ve never wrestled for New Japan. I’ve wrestled for a lot of companies in, in my career, but, I’ve never had the opportunity to even go to Japan and wrestle in Japan. So, what better way to step in day one to show everybody, hey, I’ve already beat the top guy here and, and I’m ready to continue to do it again.”
The Chicago crowd is expected to be loud when the show starts at 8 p.m. ET on Veeps. Killer Kross will defend the MLW world heavyweight title in the main event against Josh Bishop in a last man standing match.
Wyatt Matters
American workers still respect a man who earns his shot through sweat and courage rather than shortcuts or favors. When our own step up and prove they belong on the biggest stage, it reminds us that grit and determination still count for something in this country.
