January 1, Congressman-Elect Faces Calls to Resign After Admitting to “Embellishing Resume”

Congressman-elect George Santos (R-N.Y.) admitted to fabricating key details about his background, sparking calls to resign.
During Santos’s campaign, he claimed to be a Baruch College graduate, and said that he worked at finance companies Citigroup and Goldman Sachs. But during an interview with the New York Post, Santos admitted that he never worked for those companies nor graduated from the college.
“My sins here are embellishing my resume. I’m sorry,” Santos told the outlet.
Santos, who nabbed a victory in New York’s 3rd district during November’s midterm elections, also admitted that he doesn’t own 13 properties — and he previously owed his landlord thousands of dollars worth of unpaid rent.
Despite admitting to making up a series of facts about himself, Santos said he is determined to take office in January and become a House Republican.
But some members of Congress say Santos should resign.
Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-TX) tweeted: “George Santos should resign as Congressman-elect. If he refuses, Congress should expel him. He should also be investigated by authorities. Just about every aspect of his life appears to be a lie. We’ve seen people fudge their resume but this is total fabrication.”
Rep. Ted Lieu (D-CA) tweeted: “GOP Congressman-elect George Santos, who has now admitted his whopping lies, should resign. If he does not, then [GOP House Leader Kevin McCarthy] should call for a vote to expel Santos.”
During his interview with the Post, Santos also addressed accusations of lying about his family history, saying that his mother was Jewish and his grandparents had fled the Nazis during World War II.
According to Newsweek, multiple genealogists and documents suggested that Santos’s grandparents were born in Brazil.
“I never claimed to be Jewish,” Santos said. “I am Catholic. Because I learned my maternal family had a Jewish background I said I was ‘Jew-ish.’”
Santos, the first openly gay non-incumbent Republican elected to the House of Representatives, has also been accused of lying about his sexual orientation. Several outlets had reported that he was previously married to a woman before he launched his ultimately unsuccessful campaign in 2020.
Santos confirmed that he was married to a woman from 2012-2017, but insisted that he is now “very much gay.”

Exquisitely qualified to be a politician, particularly, in the the mold of trump and mccarthy, a republican politician. But party label is basically irrelevant, lying seems to be an essential part of the job description for a politician.
