January 1, Biden’s “Heartless” Response to Maui Fires Draws Ire from Hawaii Democrat: “I Campaigned for You”
In the wake of the tragic Maui wildfires, a prominent Hawaii Democrat has openly expressed his discontent with President Joe Biden’s seemingly indifferent response.
Former Hawaii state Rep. Mark Kaniela Ing (D) did not mince words when he took to X (previously known as Twitter) to call out the President, stating, “I campaigned for you. Now, when I lose dozens of my friends, family, and neighbors. This?”
It is noteworthy that Ing later removed his post from social media and subsequently elaborated on his concerns during an interview with Fox News.
The genesis of this discontent was an incident where President Biden, after spending several hours at Rehoboth beach, offered a terse “No comment” to reporters probing him about the Maui wildfires.
This minimalistic response led to allegations of the President’s reaction being “heartless,” especially considering the profound loss of life and destruction.
In his conversation with Fox News, Kaniela Ing shed light on the emotional toll of such calamities, saying, “When tragedies like this occur, it’s shocking to see people just conducting business as usual.”
He further added, “On the one hand, you don’t want everyone to be in a perpetual somber mood, but on the other hand, how can you just carry on like that? I think everyone deserves some time to take care of themselves, wind down. But, as someone in a leadership role, you need to be ready any moment to offer some empathy and solace and comfort to people that are facing a lot of trauma right now.”
Ing went on to highlight that what was truly “disappointing” was not just Biden’s succinct comment but his overarching response to the catastrophe.
Ing emphasized that what the Hawaiians currently require from their leader is not mere words but definitive action.
“He should be talking about what he’s done and what he will do,” he remarked, voicing his expectation for tangible measures. “What I’m looking for is action.”
The White House, attempting to reassure the distraught populace, has pledged support and resources to aid Hawaii’s recovery.
Notably, they have announced a financial assistance package which comprises a $700-per-household payment for those affected by the fires.
This announcement coincidentally came on the same day the State Department revealed its intention to send an additional $200 million of taxpayer money to Ukraine.
Bottom Line
The burning question now remains: Will President Biden visit the devastated region of Maui?
While he is scheduled to head to Lake Tahoe for an upcoming week-long stay, his and Vice President Kamala Harris’ visit to Hawaii seems uncertain.
The Vice President stated that both she and the President would abstain from visiting Hawaii to avoid becoming a “distraction” during the crucial recovery phase.

Biden’s response shouldn’t be surprising at all. Who could expect more from him? NOT ME! He probably didn’t even know what had happened and was caught off guard. OR, he was told and couldn’t even remember anyway. Either way, he’s a cheat, a liar, and a thief. So so sad for the Hawaiian people, who by the way, are Americans also. Finally, it’s another crime to give each family $700. I’m outraged and astounded and embarrassed by this man. I’m all for helping countries in need,(Ukraine) but Americans should come first when they are in desperate need. Where is the leader of this country when we have a crisis besides sitting on the beach? There are no words to describe such a pathetic man and his incompetent administration.
