January 1, Biden Signs $1.5T Funding Bill
President Joe Biden signed a massive $1.5 trillion bill into law, funding the federal government through September and provides billions of dollars in assistance for Ukraine.
“Today we are again showing the American people that as a country we can come together,” Biden said in prepared remarks from the White House. “That our democracy can deliver, can deliver and outperform autocracies.”
The legislation consists of a staggering 2,700 pages, funding the government through the current fiscal year and includes $13.6 billion to help Ukraine amid the Russian invasion.
“With this new security funding and the drawdown authorities in this bill, we’re moving urgently to further augment the support to the brave people of Ukraine as they defend their country,” Biden said.
Biden also touted the bill’s funding for law enforcement programs, the opioid response, and a reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act.
“It sends a clear message to the American people that we are investing in safety, health and the future of Americans,” Biden said.
