January 1, Biden Administration Selling Off Unused Border Wall Components

In a controversial move, the Biden administration has opted to dispose of unused segments that were manufactured for the intended expansion of the southern border wall.

Recent reports from The New York Post highlighted the quiet auctioning off of unused border wall segments by the Biden administration, with their worth pegged at millions.

From April onward, GovPlanet, the online auction platform with a focus on military surplus, has successfully sold more than 80 lots of “square structural tubes.”

These components, designed to function as vertical bollards for the southern border wall, have netted the auction platform an approximate $2 million from their sales.

This decision by the Biden administration coincided with the Senate’s approval of a Republican-initiated bill.

This bill, which is included in the annual defense appropriation package, seeks to pressurize the president into addressing the escalating migrant situation at the southern border.

The “Finish It Act” is explicit in its purpose. It mandates the administration either to expand the existing border wall or redistribute the unused segments to border states, such as Texas. This would enable these states to utilize them along their respective southern borders.

Republicans point out that an estimated $300 million of the taxpayer’s money has been spent on wall components that now lie unused since President Biden assumed office.

Senator Roger Wicker (R-Miss.), who sponsored the bill, expressed his disappointment with the administration’s approach.

Calling out their decision to auction the unused parts, he labeled it as “outrageous, behind-the-scenes maneuvering.”

He conveyed his sentiments to The New York Post, stating, “This sale is a wasteful and ludicrous decision by the Biden administration that only serves as further proof they have no shame.”

Interestingly, it was observed that GovPlanet augmented its sales efforts shortly after the introduction of the bill in May and again just days after its successful bipartisan passage.

In a conversation with the Daily Upside, a financial newsletter, an undisclosed source from the auction site alluded to tight-lipped regulations.

“We are legally not allowed to mention these are the border wall materials, or we could lose our jobs,” remarked the source.

Previously in 2021, the Biden administration faced backlash for incurring close to $2 billion in costs associated with storage and termination fees, while attempting to annul the border wall contracts approved during President Donald Trump’s tenure.

For context, President Trump had allocated about $15 billion during his term to facilitate the construction of nearly 700 miles of the border wall.

He envisioned it as “an impenetrable, physical, tall, powerful, beautiful southern border wall.”

However, President Biden, upon entering office, halted the project, dismissing it as “a waste of money.”

Subsequent to the termination of the border wall project, an influx of illegal immigrants was observed.

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection recorded close to 1.7 million migrant encounters in fiscal year 2021 and a whopping 2.4 million in 2022.

The funds accrued by GovPlanet from the border wall component auctions will be rerouted back to fortify the Pentagon’s budget.
