January 1, 5 Dems Likely To Run If Biden Doesn’t Seek Reelection

While there is speculation over whether President Joe Biden will seek reelection, The Hill published a list of the five Democrats “best positioned to win” their party’s nomination.

Vice President Kamala Harris

Harris is the most likely to win the nomination if Biden decides against seeking a second term. The outlet noted her visibility at the White House and name recognition — but she’s not a sure bet.

“She has fallen short of expectations,” said one Democratic strategist.

“I don’t think she has a lock on the nomination, and she’ll have some viable competitors” in 2024 if Biden doesn’t run, the strategist added.

Pete Buttigieg

Buttigieg currently serves as Biden’s Transportation secretary.

Strategists say he would be well-positioned for a 2024 bid, but some wonder if he has enough political experience to make it to the Oval Office.

Elizabeth Warren

The Hill noted that videos of Warren recently went viral when she railed against the leaked Supreme Court draft opinion indicating that they’re set to overturn Roe v. Wade.

But she’s said she doesn’t plan to run for president.

“I’m not running for president in 2024, I’m running for Senate,” she told NBC’s Meet the Press earlier this year.

“President Biden is running for reelection in 2024 and I’m supporting him.”

Bernie Sanders

Sanders’ staffers circulated a memo last month revealing that he hasn’t ruled out another presidential campaign.

“Sen. Sanders has not ruled out another run for president, so we advise that you answer any questions about 2024, with that in mind,” wrote Faiz Shakir, the Sanders adviser who served as his 2020 campaign manager.

Amy Klobuchar

The outlet noted that Klobuchar didn’t fare very well in the 2020 election, but she might receive support from moderates if Biden doesn’t run.

She gave a keynote address to New Hampshire Democrats earlier this year, which experts believe was a signal that she’s considering a 2024 run.

“It was one of the very first signs that some folks had started to eye the next election,” said one strategist.

“Because few people think Biden is going to run again.”

Nominating either Senators Warren or Sanders is a near pure prescription for the Democrats to lose the 2024 presidential election. Sen. Klobuchar is the one, and Pres. Biden should not even contemplate running for re-election.
