January 1, Disney’s Box Office Fiasco: A Year of Cinematic Disappointment

Published

on

The Walt Disney Company experienced an incredibly underwhelming year in 2023, with most of its films performing poorly at the box office. This disappointing performance comes during Disney’s 100-year anniversary and is accompanied by declining attendance at its theme parks.

The company, once known for its box office success in the 2010s, released several movies in 2023 that either underperformed or outright bombed. Elon Musk even joked online that Disney has released “more bombs than a B-52.”

Among the underperforming movies was the third Ant-Man film, which grossed over $476 million globally, making it the lowest-grossing film of the three Ant-Man movies. The live-action remake of Disney’s classic 1989 animated film, The Little Mermaid, ended its run with $569.6 million, significantly lower than the over $1 billion made by other Disney remakes like Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and The Lion King.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, the fifth film in the Indiana Jones franchise, massively underperformed at the summer box office, ending its run with just under $384 million. Haunted Mansion, based on an attraction at Disney’s theme parks, was another flop with a global gross of around $117 million against a budget of $150 million.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania was not the only Marvel movie to underperform this year. The Marvels, a sequel to Captain Marvel, ended its run with under $198 million globally, making it the lowest-grossing film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Disney’s latest animated production is still in theaters, but the company is likely wishing for better financial performance, as the film has only grossed just over $83 million as of Dec. 5.

In November, Disney CEO Bob Iger acknowledged that the company had been responsible for making too many sequels and stated that Disney would only make a sequel if “the story that the creators want to tell is worth telling.”

Next year’s lineup of films includes Deadpool 3, Inside Out 2, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, and Mufasa: The Lion King, a prequel to the 2019 film.

Why It Matters (op-ed)

Disney’s lackluster 2023 box office reveals a stark warning for the once-great company: audiences are tired of formulaic, uninspired content. Disney’s 100-year anniversary should have been a celebration of creativity, but instead, it’s marred by a string of underperforming films.

In their quest for easy cash, Disney has lost sight of what made them great. Over-reliance on sequels and remakes ultimately led to a decline in attendance at theme parks and a poor cinematic turnout. This should serve as a wake-up call to Disney and other studios: prioritize storytelling and innovation over rehashed content.

The market has spoken, and Disney must adapt or risk fading into irrelevance.

It’s much simpler than explained here. Go woke, Go broke. Disney did that perfectly.

I’M SURE A LOT OF IT HAS TO DO WITH THE PEDOFILES THERE AND THE UNDERGROUND TUNNELS TO KIDNAP KIDS. ANOTHER THING IS THEM PUSHING THIS HOMOSEXUAL RELATIONSHIP WITH THE CHARACTERS. NO ONE WANTS TO MAKE MONEY FOR THE CROOKED PEDOS.

I agree, we are tired of liberals trying to turn The USA into a cess pool. Most of America does not want Disney to subject our kids to homosexual content. we want entertainment not Disney’s opinion of homosexuals.

Americans are “sick and tried” of Disney filthy sexual contents promoted in their business.

I seriously doubt they will ever recover until the generation who bankrupted them has become history.

I don’t think the problem is so much the remakes as the WOKE message Disney is determined to promote that parents are against, and rightfully so. I hope they continue to flounder.

This is probably more true than any other explanation. Remember Bud Light?

It just goes to show that, when you turn against your customers and get on the bandwagon for unhealthy political positions, you are putting your business on the line. When we as individuals take a stand against what we feel is wrong and refuse to give money to businesses that insult our values, we combine with other individuals to form a very large and powerful group and can make our point by hitting the giant’s pocketbook – HARD! These businesses need to understand that fewer people yelling louder doesn’t make them right. We are STILL the silent majority, and families have other options.

I agree with the three comments above.

Disney’s pathetic and disgusting slide into “wokeness” is stupid beyond belief. Losing well more than half its base because of politics is the height of bad judgment. As someone who loved Disney for years, I’ll have nothing to do with its sick ness ever again, and its recovery will not come easily or quickly!

THIS WOKE BUSINESS IS JUST DISGUSTING. WE AS PARENTS WILL NEVER SET FOOT IN TO DISNEYLAND AGAIN. BESIDES THE PRICES ARE UNREAL. I RATHER SPEND OUR MONEY ON SOMETHING REAL FOR MY KIDS.THEIR ARE BETTER WAYS TO SPEND A VACATION THEN STAND IN HR LONG LINES. WE TAKE OUR KIDS HIKING THEY LOVE THE OUT DOORS.BETTER THEN ALL THESE FAKE FANTASIES.PLUS FRESH AIR.

People just want to go to the movies, to get away from the stress in their lives, Disney, stay out of politics & wokeness? I will not see a Disney film any time soon.

Disney made a good move in hiring Iger back, but he really needs to pay attention to the comments. Disney no longer stands for the good and moral standards that attracted parents to bring their children to the movies

Its not Disney’s rehash of old material, it is its promotion of WOKEness, homosexuality, and its disdain for what the public wants and what parents want for their kids. Disney’s far-left political agenda has distanced them from mainstream society. I personally have cancelled my subscriptions to Disney Plus and Hulu, and cancelled any plans for a trip to Walt Disney World. I will go to no Disney movies nor encourage any member of my large family to do so. I will buy no Disney merchandise, toys, books, or DVDs for my 13 grandchildren. If they ever get back to what they used to be, I will think long and hard before I allow my faith in Disney to be restored. Poor Walt must be turning over in his grave (or his cryogenic vault).
