January 1, Elite School Faces Growing Scrutiny Over Decades-Old Allegations

Wyatt’s Take
- Matthew Rutledge, once nicknamed Mr. Wonderful, pleaded not guilty to three counts of rape involving former students.
- The allegations span years at Miss Hall’s School, where two women say they were targeted and abused.
- A private investigation reported that school leadership allegedly allowed the abuse to continue for decades.
An elite Massachusetts boarding school is facing a long-overdue reckoning after a former teacher was finally hauled into court.
The allegations span a decade at Miss Hall’s School. Two women say they were targeted and abused, and they had to fight through years of silence and an initial rejection by the local district attorney to get their day in court.
One of the victims, Melissa Fares, spoke out plainly after the recent court appearance.
“Miss Hall’s School knew,” Fares alleged to reporters. “This whole school knew. They enabled a culture of abuse for decades.”
The school says it is now cooperating with authorities and expressed sorrow for the harm experienced by survivors. Prosecutors say the investigation into other staff members at the institution remains ongoing.
Wyatt Matters
This case is another reminder that elite institutions should never be allowed to shield wrongdoing or put reputation ahead of protecting children.
