Wyatt’s Take

  • Dunia Sibomana-Rodriguez survived a chimpanzee attack at age six.
  • His wrestling coach on Long Island adopted him during middle school.
  • He earned a full scholarship to the University of North Carolina.

A young man from the Congo survived a horrific animal attack to become one of America’s best high school wrestlers. This is a story of grit and the power of the American dream.

Dunia Sibomana-Rodriguez is proving that hard work overcomes any obstacle. After surviving a brutal childhood in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, he moved to the United States and found his calling on the mat.

As a young boy, he suffered a terrifying attack by chimpanzees that claimed his cousin’s life and left him with severe facial injuries. He lost a finger and part of his ear during the incident.

“I don’t think I would have ever thought I’d be here, coming from my country and ending up being a good wrestler,” said Sibomana-Rodriguez.

Since arriving in America, he underwent more than a dozen surgeries to repair the damage from the attack. He refused to let physical limitations define his future or slow him down.

Before ever stepping onto a wrestling mat, he had to fight for his life. Now, he is a five-time Nassau County champion and has secured three state titles in New York.

His recent victory as a national champion solidifies his place as an elite athlete. This success earned him a scholarship to continue his education and athletic career at the Division I level.

Dunia’s journey shows that where you start doesn’t have to be where you finish. He is a shining example of what happens when life-changing opportunity meets a tireless work ethic.
