President Trump will visit China from March 31 to April 2, right as the Supreme Court tosses out much of his biggest tariffs on imports. His meeting with China’s President Xi comes with economic tension high and America’s trade moves in question.

Trump’s team confirmed the trip just before the court undercut his global trade push, including penalties aimed at China. Both leaders were expected to talk about keeping a trade truce that kept new tariffs off the table, but the court ruling stirs up fresh uncertainty.

The Supreme Court said Trump went too far using emergency rules to hammer China with 20% tariffs. These were supposed to answer fentanyl crises and unfair trade, but the court said they overstepped.

“That’s going to be a wild one,” Trump told foreign leaders about the China trip. “We have to put on the biggest display you’ve ever had in the history of China.”

Other tariffs under trade laws still stand, but Trump now wants to add a new 10% tariff on all imports for the next 150 days. It’s not clear exactly which old tariffs he might try to revive.

This is Trump’s first return to China since 2017. Beijing hasn’t officially confirmed the dates, keeping its cards close.

Lately, Trump trimmed some tariffs as China agreed to tackle fentanyl and hold back on key mineral bans. But with this court loss, China sees an opening, with experts saying it makes the U.S. look weaker in Beijing’s eyes.

China’s leaders are happy about how things are shifting, wanting to keep the U.S. from ramping things up again.

At their last face-to-face in October, Trump and Xi set a trade truce, mostly steering clear of thorny Taiwan issues. But recent talks have seen Xi protesting U.S. weapons going to Taiwan, a place China claims but the U.S. quietly backs with arms.

America’s largest arms sale to Taiwan was just approved—$11.1 billion worth. Taiwan expects even more support as threats loom.

Xi also hinted he might help U.S. farmers by buying more soybeans, yet after the court ruling, China may hold off on big farm buys. American farmers are counting on that market to survive.

Though Trump justified his hard line on trade as a way to keep China in check, he’s eased off in other areas, including high-tech exports and some tariffs.

The trade war he started after his reelection has made some allies angry, with critics saying blanket tariffs ended up letting China off the hook.

Experts warn this court ruling might actually force China to face more competition if other nations’ tariffs fall faster than China’s, since lasting tariffs on China are tougher to repeal.
