January 1, Senate Stalemate Edges America Closer to Shutdown
Wyatt’s Take
- Senate couldn’t secure enough votes to keep the government open.
- A continuing resolution failed with a 55-45 vote when 60 were needed.
- Most Republicans backed the plan, with just a handful of Democrats and one independent joining.
The Senate came up short Tuesday night in its effort to keep federal services running, as a vote on the House’s temporary funding plan failed to hit the sixty-vote goal.
The plan would have extended government funding until November 21, but it stalled out with 55 in favor and 45 against.
Most Republicans voted to pass the measure, while only Pennsylvania’s Sen. John Fetterman, Nevada’s Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, and Maine Independent Sen. Angus King joined them. Kentucky’s Sen. Rand Paul broke ranks, voting no with most Democrats.
If there’s no last-minute breakthrough, the shutdown will begin at midnight Tuesday, directly affecting federal workers and day-to-day services.
America’s families are left in the lurch again as elected leaders argue over budgets instead of making tough choices.
