January 1, Star College Quarterback Walks Away From NFL at Age 31

Wyatt’s Take

  • Will Grier, once a household name in college football, hung up his cleats at 31 after just two NFL appearances
  • Despite offers from multiple teams including a coaching gig with the Cowboys, he chose to leave the game entirely
  • His brief NFL career saw him throw four interceptions and zero touchdowns in limited action with Carolina

Will Grier made it official Wednesday — he’s done with football. The former West Virginia star who lit up college stadiums announced his retirement at just 31 years old, walking away from the sport that once made him a third-round draft pick.

“Retired today,” Grier posted to Instagram, keeping it simple and straight to the point.

The Carolina Panthers, who drafted Grier back in 2019, confirmed the news. He’d just signed with them again this past April, and even had a coaching opportunity waiting with the Dallas Cowboys. But Grier decided neither path was for him.

His NFL career never took off like his college days promised. Grier played in exactly two games — both during his rookie season with Carolina. In that limited action, he threw for 228 yards and tossed four interceptions without a single touchdown.

That’s a tough pill to swallow for a guy who once dominated at West Virginia and played for the Florida Gators before that.

Grier bounced around the league like so many backup quarterbacks do. After Carolina, he spent time with the Cowboys, Cincinnati Bengals, New England Patriots, Los Angeles Chargers, and Philadelphia Eagles. None of those stops resulted in any playing time.

Fellow quarterbacks showed their respect on social media. Dak Prescott sent encouragement, writing:

“Never retired, just switching lanes. Congrats my brother.”

Jake Ferguson and Kenny Pickett also paid tribute to Grier on his Instagram Stories.

With Grier out, the Panthers head into camp with three quarterbacks: Pickett, former number one overall pick Bryce Young, and Haynes King.

Wyatt Matters

Not every talented college player makes it in the pros, and there’s no shame in that. Grier’s story reminds us that sometimes the dream doesn’t work out the way we hope, but knowing when to move on takes its own kind of courage. He gave it a shot, wore the jersey, and now he’s moving forward. That’s the American way — when one door closes, you find another one.
