January 1, LA Times Editor Blames Climate Change for Something That’s Happened Every Summer Since Forever

Wyatt’s Take
- LA Times sports editor says college football needs to reschedule games because of ‘climate change’ — even though Texas has always been scorching hot in September
- Fans left early from games in Austin and LA during brutal heat — legitimate scheduling complaint hijacked by climate hysteria
- Typical summer temperatures in Texas now being weaponized by woke media to push liberal agenda into sports
College football kicked off with the usual excitement, packed stadiums, and one completely predictable element that somehow shocked the liberal media: summer heat in Texas.
When USC hosted San Jose State in Week 0 at the LA Coliseum, sparse crowds showed up to endure a noon kickoff in brutal conditions. The heat index hit 105 degrees, thanks to unusual humidity from tropical storm remnants off the West Coast. Smart fans stayed home.
Week 1 brought similar scenes in South Carolina and Austin, where the Texas Longhorns played in punishing afternoon heat. Fans huddled under concourses seeking shade. Some left early. A few needed treatment for heat exhaustion.
Reasonable people asked reasonable questions: Why are networks scheduling games at 2 p.m. in early September in climates where that’s just asking for trouble?
But one LA Times editor saw an opportunity to inject woke ideology into football.
Iliana Limon Romero, assistant managing editor and sports editor at the Times, posted her hot take on X after seeing photos of Longhorns fans escaping the heat:
“At some point, schools and TV networks are going to have to adapt to climate change and stop expecting fans to tolerate extreme heat as a badge of honor supporting their teams.”
Climate change. In Texas. In September.
Let’s get a few things straight. TV networks absolutely should consider local conditions when scheduling games. There’s zero reason Austin should host a game at 2 p.m. in early September when nighttime is an option. Fans shouldn’t risk heat exhaustion for a blowout game.
Those are legitimate concerns.
But blaming typical Texas summer heat on climate change? That’s where this crosses from reasonable commentary into ideological nonsense.
The average high temperature in Austin for early September is 95 to 97 degrees. Game day was a few degrees warmer — hardly unprecedented. It’s been hot in Texas in September since, well, forever. That’s not climate change. That’s Texas.
Romero quickly blocked anyone who pointed this out, because facts don’t matter when you’re pushing the liberal climate agenda.
The climate change movement has become a secular religion for the left. Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth” made predictions that never came true, yet questioning “The Science” remains forbidden in liberal circles. A hot day in Austin becomes evidence of global catastrophe, even when it’s perfectly normal weather.
Weather isn’t climate, they tell us — until they need it to be.
This is what happens when ideology consumes journalism. The LA Times, once a respected newspaper, now employs editors who see every issue through a political lens. Can’t just say “maybe don’t schedule games at noon in Texas in September.” No, it has to be about climate change, about adaptation, about making a political statement.
Sports used to be the one place Americans could escape this nonsense. Now the woke mob has infiltrated there too, turning a simple scheduling complaint into another opportunity to lecture Middle America about their supposed sins against the environment.
Texas will still be hot in September next year. And the year after that. Not because of climate change, but because that’s what happens in Texas in the summer.
Maybe the LA Times should worry less about pushing political narratives and more about understanding basic geography and seasonal weather patterns. But that would require actual journalism instead of activism masquerading as sports coverage.
Wyatt Matters
This is why regular Americans have lost faith in mainstream media. They can’t even cover a football game without injecting their political agenda. Texas has been hot in September since before any of us were born, but now suddenly it’s a crisis that requires restructuring college sports? It’s insulting to working folks who actually live in these places and understand their own weather patterns better than some coastal editor pushing a narrative from an air-conditioned office in LA.
