January 1, American League Dominates in Shutout Victory

Wyatt’s Take
- American League pitchers delivered a masterclass, striking out 15 batters and holding the National League to just three singles in a complete shutout
- The game celebrated America’s 250th birthday in Philadelphia with a display of red, white, and blue pride that reminded us what this country stands for
- Despite the patriotic setting at Citizens Bank Park, offense took a backseat as pitching dominated and the AL claimed its 18th win in the last 23 All-Star matchups
The 2026 MLB All-Star Game rolled into Philadelphia with all the patriotic fanfare you’d expect for America’s 250th birthday. Red, white, and blue everywhere, and a roster packed with the best players the game has to offer.
But Citizens Bank Park, normally a launching pad for home runs, turned into a pitcher’s paradise Tuesday night. The American League shut out the National League 4-0 in the 96th Midsummer Classic, and it wasn’t even close.
Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Dylan Cease set the tone right out of the gate, striking out the side in the first inning. From there, 10 AL relievers kept the hammer down, finishing off a three-hit shutout that left the NL looking helpless at the plate.
New York Yankees outfielder Cody Bellinger got things started early with a two-run single. Ben Rice followed with an RBI single in the first, both coming off Philadelphia Phillies’ Cristopher Sánchez, who probably wishes he’d called in sick.
Chicago White Sox infielder Miguel Vargas added some insurance in the eighth with a solo home run off Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Justin Wrobleski. That was the only extra-base hit of the entire game, a rarity in today’s power-happy baseball.
The AL has now won 18 of the last 23 All-Star Games and holds a 49-45-2 edge overall in the series.
The National League managed just three measly singles all night. Juan Soto got one in the fourth, Pete Crow-Armstrong in the eighth, and Otto Lopez in the ninth.
Not a single NL runner made it past first base. That’s not just getting beat, that’s getting embarrassed on your own turf.
Pitchers combined for 27 strikeouts, with 15 coming from the AL staff. It was a clinic in how to dominate a lineup full of All-Stars.
Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber led off for the NL, filling in for Shohei Ohtani, who skipped the game to get knee surgery. Last year Schwarber was the hero in baseball’s first-ever swing-off tiebreaker, but this year he couldn’t get anything going.
Detroit Tigers outfielder Riley Greene and two Yankees, first baseman Ben Rice and Bellinger, all earned starting spots because other players were dealing with injuries.
Tampa Bay Rays third baseman Junior Caminero took a scary hit to his left hand in the third inning when St. Louis Cardinals closer Riley O’Brien drilled him with a 97.6 mph sinker. The 23-year-old slugger, who ranks fourth in the majors with 28 homers, went down for a moment before popping up and sprinting to the clubhouse.
X-rays came back negative, so he dodged a bullet there.
Players get Wednesday off before the Phillies host the New York Mets on Thursday. The rest of the league fires back up Friday.
Wyatt Matters
Baseball’s Midsummer Classic reminded us why this game matters. In a country turning 250 years old, there’s something timeless about watching our national pastime played at the highest level. The American League showed up ready to work, and they got the job done. That’s the kind of grit and determination that built this country, and it’s what keeps baseball at the heart of who we are as Americans.
