January 1, Prosecutors Request Parents of Accused Michigan School Shooter to Stop ‘Blowing Kisses’ in Court

In Michigan, prosecutors have asked a judge to bar the parents of the accused Oxford High School shooter from making romantic gestures towards each other in court, calling it a “mockery of the crimes they’re accused of committing.”

According to a motion filed in Oakland County District Court, James and Jennifer Crumbley, who were each charged with four counts of involuntary manslaughter in the Nov. 30 shooting at Oxford High School, allegedly mouthed the words “I love you” during in-person and remote hearings.

Prosecutors said the couple also waved at each other and made other non-verbal signals.

The romantic gestures “disparage the integrity of the judicial proceedings as a serious distraction” and are “traumatic for the family members of the deceased victims who are no longer able to express their love to the victims,” the motion read.

“The courtroom is not a place for blowing kisses and sending secret signals,” Oakland County Chief Assistant Prosecutor David Williams said in a statement.

“This is a time for families to pursue justice.”
