January 1, ‘Oh the Irony’: CNN Reporters Robbed While Covering Crime in San Francisco

A CNN crew was robbed while covering a story about rampant street crime in San Francisco, California.
CNN correspondent Kyung Lah shared the ironic incident in a series of tweets, including an image of the crew’s rental car with a smashed windshield.
“Got robbed. Again. [CNN producer Jason Kravarik] & I were at city hall in San Francisco to do an interview for @CNN,” Kah tweeted. “We had security to watch our rental car + crew car. Thieves did this in under 4 seconds. Security stopped the jerks from stealing other bags. But seriously- this is ridiculous.”
Lah noted the irony of being robbed in San Francisco while being in the city to cover rising crime.

“Our hired security guard tried to grab the crooks (I’m glad he didn’t get hurt!) but he got this picture of the getaway car,” she tweeted. “To the jerks who stole our stuff— I hope someone on this site sees your plate and you get caught.”

Lah, whose passport and ID were stolen, expressed frustration over the fact that hiring security to surveil their car wasn’t enough to deter criminals.
“San Francisco is a beautiful city. This is our 3rd day here and I’ve loved my time here. But if you do visit this city, know that even with hired security watching your car, it is not enough,” she tweeted.

News of the incident quickly spread, with many commenters amused by the extreme irony.
“So this is just an amazing story — A CNN crew over the weekend was robbed while covering street crime in San Francisco, which — oh, the irony. Oh, the irony,” said conservative podcaster Ben Shapiro.
“But CNN found out the hard way. What happens when you go to a high-crime city to investigate the problem of street crime? The answer is, you actually get robbed.”
