January 1, Indiana Student Defies School’s Order to Remove American Flag

East Central High School senior, Cameron Blasek, has recently come forward to share his experience after being instructed to take down the American flag from his truck. The Indiana student has been in the spotlight following his refusal to comply with the directive.

“The flag itself represents this country, this beautiful country that we live in,” Blasek stated in an interview with WCPO. “It also represents the people who fought their lives for it. And I think that’s a really hard thing to talk about, but I think it’s a big thing.”

According to Blasek, it was his counselor and vice principal who asked him to remove the American flag from his vehicle. However, he stood his ground and refused to do so.

“I said, ‘no, that’s not going to happen. I can’t,'” Blasek recounted.

As reported by WCPO, the flag “abides by U. S. flag code.” Blasek further explained that he had thoroughly read through his school handbook and found no rules prohibiting him from displaying a flag on his vehicle.

“I read through the Essentials 2023-2024 Handbook, and the word ‘flag’ wasn’t even mentioned in the parking lot or driving section. The only section it’s mentioned in is the flag-twirling section,” he clarified.

Following Blasek’s stand, others joined in, displaying American flags on their vehicles as well.

“There was a huge support group there that believed and stood for the same thing that I did and I was kind of shocked by that,” Blasek told WCPO.

Blasek’s story has since gained significant traction online, amassing over 6 million views on X alone. In response to the ensuing controversy, Principal Tom Black issued a statement to parents.

“I am pleased to inform you that we are allowing the display of the U. S. flag by students in the parking lot,” the letter reads, as per WCPO.

Black also clarified that “no high school staff member or administrators stated or insinuated that the U. S. Flag was offensive, nor has there ever been a complaint received about the U.S. Flag.”

“I think everybody gets offended over something that doesn’t mean what everybody says it does. This flag represents our country and the people who died for it and fought for it and I respect that with my whole heart.”

In a statement to Fox News Digital, Black explained that East Central High School has had a rule for several years “that no flags are allowed on vehicles in our parking lot.”

“The rule was never about the US Flag, and it was regarding all flags on vehicles,” Black wrote. “This is due to potential safety issues with visibility and 500-600 teenage drivers leaving at the same time during dismissal, as well as concerns that flags that are not appropriate for school will be displayed.”

Black further stated that after consultation with the Superintendent, the school decided that it could permit the “US Flag while still having the authority to restrict other flags that are deemed inappropriate for school.”

“I met with most of the students Friday and informed them that they would be allowed to display the US Flag, but they should respectfully abide by the US Flag Code,” Black wrote. “This was before the original social media post. The inaccurate narrative is that we changed our mind due to social media backlash. That is not true, as the timeline reveals.”

“We regret and are sorry for the confusion and are working diligently to clarify the issue with our community,” Black concluded.

Why It Matters (op-ed)

Cameron Blasek’s refusal to remove the American flag from his truck is a powerful statement against the growing trend of anti-patriotism in our schools. His courage in standing up for what he believes in is commendable.

The fact that Blasek had to fight for his right to display the flag speaks volumes about the state of our nation. It’s disheartening to see school administrators attempting to suppress a student’s expression of patriotism.

Thankfully, Blasek’s story has gained traction, and his school has reversed its decision. This serves as an important reminder that we must continue to stand up against attempts to undermine our national pride and values.

It’s sad that when these “Too Powerful School Administrators” are exposed that they try to hide behind anything they can to “EXCUSE their BS RULES” put in place by them only, thinking that they would never get caught!!

And the consequences for the terrible decision made by an administrator who thinks he can play dictator are ?????? Should be disciplined in writing at a minimum so that “progressive discipline” can start. Anyone with this poor judgment will screw up again and most school contracts require multiple documented events to fire someone.

It is wonderful to see a young man stand up for his rights. We have quite a few people here who do that and it is great to see. If you can’t display your American flag, there is a problem.
