Golf legend Tiger Woods is stepping away from the spotlight to seek professional treatment following his recent arrest in Florida. The move comes after a rollover crash where police say they found prescription opioids on the star athlete.
Woods faces charges of driving under the influence with property damage. Deputies reported the golfer appeared lethargic and showed significant signs of impairment.
Tiger released a statement explaining that he needs to prioritize his health and well-being during this difficult period.
“I know and understand the seriousness of the situation I find myself in today,” Woods said in his social media post.
“I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health.”
The arrest occurred in Jupiter Island after a collision with another vehicle. Police reports state Woods refused to take a blood alcohol test following the crash.
Officers on the scene noted that Woods was sweating profusely and had bloodshot, glassy eyes once he removed his sunglasses. They described his movements as slow and his pupils as extremely dilated.
“I’m committed to taking the time needed to return in a healthier, stronger, and more focused place, both personally and professionally,” Woods added.
The 15-time major winner is now asking for privacy for himself and his family as he begins his recovery process. He waived his arraignment this week as the legal case moves forward.
