January 1, Trump Backs Iran Protesters After Years of Silence
Wyatt’s Take
- Obama admitted he didn’t support Iranian protesters in 2009.
- Trump promised strong action if Iran attacks current protesters.
- Iran warns America to stay out of its affairs.
Back in 2009, Barack Obama said he made a “mistake” by not siding with Iranians who dared protest their government. This week, President Trump made it clear America won’t sit silent if Iran tries to crush protesters again.
“If Iran violently kills peaceful protesters, which is their custom, the United States of America will come to their rescue,” Trump posted on TruthSocial. “We are locked and loaded and ready to go.”
Unlike before, Trump’s tough words show that the U.S. now stands boldly with the people of Iran, not their rulers.
Former CIA analyst Fred Fleitz said, “It’s crucial that the leader of the free world quickly speak out and say which side he is on.” He pointed out Obama stayed quiet in 2009, hoping to keep nuclear deal talks going, while Trump responded straight away.
Trump had already sent strong warnings to Iran by hitting their nuclear sites in July and by taking out IRGC leader Qassem Soleimani in 2020. Fleitz explained the administration could now put even heavier sanctions in place or intercept military supplies headed to Iran.
Iranian leaders shot back, saying America should mind its own business. “Trump should know that intervention by the U.S. in the domestic problem corresponds to chaos in the entire region and the destruction of U.S. interests,” warned Iran’s security council leader, Ali Larijani.
The unrest began when frustrated street vendors, hammered by high prices, took to the streets. Their protests have grown, spreading across the country. Many say this is the biggest threat Iran’s rulers have seen since 2009’s Green Revolution, which ended in bloodshed.
Years later, Obama admitted on a podcast, “In retrospect, I think that was a mistake.” He said the U.S. should always shine a spotlight on people fighting for freedom.
Ali Safavi of Iran’s opposition said Trump’s stance is “a welcome departure from the tepid response Obama gave in 2009.”
If Trump’s words turn into action, Iran’s protesters may finally get some real backing from the land of the free.
