January 1, School District Restores Pledge After Lawsuit Sparks Change

Wyatt’s Take
- A Maine school district restored the Pledge of Allegiance after a lawsuit from a father and son.
- The high school had reportedly gone two years without the daily tradition.
- The district says it has now set a designated time for students who want to participate.
Christopher Hickey filed the suit for his son, Clayton, after noticing the Pledge was missing from the high school day.
The district policy requires the American flag to be visible in every single classroom.
Superintendent Steve Nolan said the school has now set a designated time for students who wish to participate.
He suggested the matter could have been handled without a lawsuit, but the family’s lawyer disagrees.
The district had ample time to correct this longstanding omission on its own and failed to do so.
Attorney Jack Baldacci stated the school should have followed its own rules before it was forced to do so.
A recent survey shows that 70 percent of voters cannot pass a basic civics test.
This kind of civic decline often starts when schools stop prioritizing patriotic traditions and basic education.
Wyatt Matters
Honoring our flag and civic duties should remain a basic part of American education, not an afterthought.
