A horrific crime has rocked a ritzy neighborhood in our nation’s capital after a man was brutally murdered inside his own home.

Police arrested 36-year-old Rico Rashaad Barnes for the first-degree murder of Syed Hammad Hussain.

Hussain was found bound, beaten, and set on fire after two criminals allegedly followed him into his condominium to rob him.

Interim Metropolitan Police Chief Jeff Carroll described the scene as particularly heinous during a recent news conference.

Mr. Hussain was found suffering from blunt force trauma and thermal injuries inside of his apartment.

Surveillance footage shows the suspects following the victim into his building around 1:30 a.m. and eventually forcing their way inside.

The video shows two suspects appearing to follow Mr. Hussain into the building, Commander Kevin Kentish said.

Shortly thereafter, the suspects knocked on the door, and Mr. Hussain allowed them inside.

Once inside, the victim was tied up at his wrists and ankles while the suspects ransacked the home for jewelry and cash.

The medical examiner confirmed that the fire was started after the victim had already been killed.

Investigators believe the attackers and the victim did not know each other before the fatal encounter.

Barnes is currently being held as the legal process moves forward in the D.C. court system.

The killer needs to be tried in federal court looking toward a capital sentence. DC courts are catch and release for dangerous criminals. Never forget the Dr. Michael Halberstam case from the 1970’s, had the crime occurred across the street in Maryland, the killer could have received a capital sentence. Never in DC unless tried federally.
