January 1, Montana’s Political Landscape Turns Completely Red
Montana is now a solid red state, folks! In the 2024 election, they voted out the last Democrat who was in office across the whole state.
A long time ago, back in 1889, Montana picked two Republican senators when it first became a state. And in the early 1900s, there were more GOP folks in the Senate. But it took over 100 years to get another Republican pair in there, which finally happened in 2024!
For the first time since 1897, Republicans are leading the whole state, from the Senate to the governor and all the congressional seats.
Montana’s journey towards being a red state started back in 1997 when it began voting for Republicans in the House of Representatives.
In 2007, Democrat Sen. Jon Tester took office, and Montana was mostly blue with two Democrats in the Senate and a Democratic governor.
But things started changing in 2014. That’s when Republican Sen. Steve Daines took over a Democratic Senate seat, marking the start of a big shift towards the GOP that covered the whole state over time.
Since 2021, a Republican has always been in the governor’s office.
Tester was the last Democrat holding a statewide seat in Montana, but after 18 years, he lost this time. Republican Navy SEAL Tim Sheehy took over in one of the hottest Senate races we were all watching in 2024.
Sen. Daines said, “Montana’s voters are thinking more right these days. The Democrats have gone too far left. They’re not the same party I knew growing up in Montana.”
Daines also explained that many people moved to Montana from blue states like California and Oregon. They left behind those “heavy-handed” places to enjoy life in a red state like Montana.
He said, “We see lots of new folks coming to Montana in the last five or six years. They’re not just coming for our great quality of life; they want leaders who share their center-right values. We call them ‘political refugees’ because they’re coming to join us, not change us.”
In 2025, Montana will have leaders like Sen. Daines, Sen. Sheehy, Gov. Greg Gianforte, Rep. Ryan Zinke, and Rep.-elect Troy Downing.
Wyatt Matters!
Montana has transformed into a solid red state, and this change brings excitement for many people here. Watching the journey since 1997, when Montana started voting more Republican, gives a sense of pride and shows how much things have changed. The switch began when Steve Daines took a Democratic Senate seat in 2014, and now, in 2024, Republican Tim Sheehy has taken over the last Democratic Senate seat. This marks a complete shift that took years to develop but feels like a natural fit for Montana’s values.
The story of Montana’s political shift isn’t just about who holds office but also about the people who call Montana home. In recent years, many new residents have moved to Montana from states like California and Oregon. They are looking for a new place to live that matches their beliefs better. These folks are often referred to as “political refugees” because they come to Montana to enjoy its way of life and share center-right values, rather than to change it. This movement has helped solidify Montana’s red-state status and has influenced the voting trends in the region.
Now, Montana is filled with leaders who align with these values, such as Sen. Sheehy, Sen. Daines, and Gov. Greg Gianforte. This new political landscape promises to bring policies that focus on what many Montanans feel strongly about. With this transformation, the state looks forward to a future led by those who truly reflect the spirit and priorities of Montana’s people, continuing to offer a great quality of life while supporting center-right governance.

My early formative years were spent in Billings. It defined red state values of freedom and self-reliance and my father loved the town and state. Family issues resulted in a return to Minnesota, a place that felt alien and oppressive to me, even though I was only 8 at the time. Dad loved and missed the west and had no affection for the socialist values of MN, a state he had cheerfully left. Over the years I saw MT elect more and more Democrats and reacted with disbelief at how anyone of that party could even win a small office there. I had considered returning to Billings for life, but feared the trend would only continue. God bless the folks of MT for making a return to the place I called home a possibility once again.
