January 1, Gilgo Beach Killer Pleads Guilty in Long Island Horror

Wyatt’s Take
- Rex Heuermann admitted to horrific crimes that terrorized Long Island for decades.
- He confessed to killing seven women and to the murder of an eighth in a plea deal.
- Prosecutors say he will likely spend the rest of his life behind bars without parole.
The Long Island architect admitted to the murders of Sandra Costilla, Valerie Mack, Jessica Taylor, and five other women. Prosecutors say he will receive three consecutive life sentences plus another 100 years for his crimes.
Heuermann also agreed to cooperate with the FBI as part of the deal.
His family watched from the courtroom as he gave up his long-standing claims of innocence.
His ex-wife, Asa Ellerup, asked for privacy while expressing sympathy for the victims.
"My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families," Ellerup said outside the courthouse.
"Their loss is immeasurable and the focus should be on them at this time and moment," she told reporters.
This closes a dark chapter for New York, but the pain left behind will linger for years.
