Wyatt’s Take

  • DHS says Rep. Omar’s accusation about ICE is a “ridiculous lie.”
  • ICE states it does not arrest or deport U.S. citizens without cause.
  • Claims against ICE have sparked heated debate over law enforcement actions.

The Department of Homeland Security rejected Rep. Ilhan Omar’s claim that ICE is “disappearing U.S. citizens.” Omar made her statement at a protest, saying ICE was targeting Americans without precedent.

She argued, “When people are disappeared in the darkness, American democracy dies.” Omar called this a “brand new policy” and said people with documentation are also detained unfairly.

In response, DHS official Tricia McLaughlin stated, “ICE does not ‘disappear’ people. This is a ridiculous lie that the media is peddling to demonize ICE law enforcement who are facing a 1,300% increase in assaults against them.”

McLaughlin added, “ICE does NOT arrest or deport U.S. citizens. If a U.S. citizen is arrested, it is because they have obstructed or assaulted law enforcement. Every day the men and women of ICE put their lives on the line to protect and defend the lives of American citizens. This violence against ICE must end.”

DHS has previously addressed these types of claims, calling them false in an earlier press release. Senator Marco Rubio also described headlines about deporting U.S. citizen children as “misleading.”

Omar’s office has not provided examples of U.S. citizens being wrongly detained or deported by ICE.
