Wyatt’s Take
- Frank Beard, the legendary drummer who powered ZZ Top’s iconic Texas rock sound for over five decades, has passed away at 77
- The beardless member of the bearded trio helped create timeless American anthems like ‘La Grange’ and ‘Sharp Dressed Man’ that defined patriotic rock and roll
- ZZ Top’s music represented unapologetic American spirit — blue-collar grit, Southern pride, and the freedom to rock without compromise
Frank Beard, the steady-beating heart behind one of America’s most beloved rock bands, has died at age 77. The drummer for ZZ Top — the Texas boogie-rock trio that became synonymous with American muscle, leather, and long beards — passed away, leaving behind a legacy that spans generations of proud American music fans.
Beard was the rhythmic foundation for a band that embodied everything great about American rock and roll. While his bandmates Billy Gibbons and Dusty Hill sported the iconic floor-length beards, Beard — ironically the only clean-shaven member — drove the band’s signature sound with thunderous precision and no-nonsense drumming.
ZZ Top wasn’t just a band. They were an American institution.
From smoky Texas bars to sold-out arenas across the heartland, they delivered a sound that was raw, authentic, and unapologetically masculine. Songs like “La Grange,” “Tush,” and “Sharp Dressed Man” became anthems for working men who knew the value of hard work, cold beer, and American-made guitars.
“Frank was the rock we built everything on,” bandmate Billy Gibbons said in previous interviews about Beard’s contribution to the group’s sound. “His drumming was the engine that never quit.”
The trio formed in Houston in 1969 and quickly became legends of Southern rock. While the coastal elites were pushing psychedelic nonsense and protest songs, ZZ Top was giving America what it really wanted — straightforward, boot-stomping rock with Texas swagger.
Their 1983 album “Eliminator” brought them to MTV-era superstardom, but they never sold out their sound or their values. The music videos featured hot rods, beautiful women, and zero apologies — a far cry from the woke garbage polluting today’s airwaves.
Beard’s drumming style was deceptively simple but devastatingly effective. He didn’t need flashy solos or complicated fills.
He just laid down the groove and let the music breathe. That workmanlike approach to his craft made him a hero to blue-collar musicians everywhere who understood that getting the job done right mattered more than showing off.
The band toured relentlessly for decades, bringing their brand of American rock to every corner of the country. They never forgot their roots, never turned their backs on their fans, and never compromised their sound to chase trends.
Beard is survived by family members who respected his privacy throughout his career. Unlike today’s attention-seeking celebrities, Beard let his drumsticks do the talking.
The music world has lost a giant, but Frank Beard’s legacy will continue to thunder through the speakers of pickup trucks, dive bars, and garage bands across America for generations to come.
Wyatt Matters
Frank Beard represented an era when American rock music was still about talent, hard work, and authenticity — not virtue signaling and corporate wokeness. ZZ Top never lectured their fans about politics or tried to shame them for loving America. They just played great music and respected the people who bought their records. That’s the kind of cultural legacy Middle America can be proud of, and it’s a reminder of what we’ve lost as entertainment has been overtaken by radical leftists who despise traditional values.
