A bill that would remove Walt Disney World’s self-governing status has passed through the Florida Senate.

The measure passed through the Senate with a vote of 23-16. If enacted, the bill would dismantle all special districts in the state, including the Reedy Creek Improvement District, which enables Disney to oversee its own zoning and infrastructure laws.

“Special districts could in some instances show favoritism,” a DeSantis spokesperson said in a statement.

“Should a corporation be serving as a regulator and a business at the same time? Should a corporation get to avoid standard environmental permitting processes? Should a corporation engage in eminent domain? Other businesses don’t get these privileges.”

Next, the bill heads to the Florida House, and if it passes, to the governor’s desk.
