A federal judge in Florida has ordered the Alligator Alcatraz detention facility to shut down within sixty days. Effective immediately, no more detainees can be placed at the center by federal or state authorities.
The judge directed the state to start removing generators and other equipment from the site as soon as possible. This is a temporary order while the legal fight continues in court.

The state’s legal team pointed out that a judge in the very same district recently declined to handle a case about Alligator Alcatraz, claiming the court didn’t have jurisdiction.
Just this week, a judge in the same district as Judge Williams refused to hear a case because the Southern District of Florida was the improper venue for suits about Alligator Alcatraz.

Governor Ron DeSantis says the state saw this judgment coming and will appeal the order right away.
