January 1, Sanders, AOC Line Up Behind Mamdani for NYC
Wyatt’s Take
- Top left-wing leaders are rallying behind Mamdani in New York City.
- Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez back his push against Cuomo’s return.
- Progressives look to control the mayor’s office with bold promises.
Bernie Sanders gave his support to Zohran Mamdani, a far-left candidate for New York City’s next mayor. His announcement puts more pressure on former governor Andrew Cuomo, who’s aiming for a return to office.
Mamdani, a state assemblyman, also secured Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s endorsement. This makes him the preferred candidate of the national progressive movement. Their goal is to energize support against moderates like Cuomo while pushing big government policies.
“We need a new politics and new leadership which is prepared to stand up to powerful corporate interests and fight for the working class,” Sanders said.
Sanders praised Mamdani’s plans for massive spending on government housing, public transit, child care, and a higher minimum wage. The plan calls for tax hikes on high-earners and more city-run programs. Sanders said Mamdani’s campaign rejects “corporate Democratic establishment” donors.
Polls show Mamdani now stands in second place, challenging Cuomo’s lead among Democrats. Sanders took to X, saying, “Status quo politics isn’t good enough. We need new leadership that is prepared to stand up to powerful corporate interests and fight for the working class.”
Mamdani, originally from Uganda, called Sanders “the single most influential political figure in my life.” He pledged to fight for the working class every day if elected. Both Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez have appeared publicly to support him in the primary race.
The crowded field of progressives hopes Sanders’ endorsement will unite their side to stop Cuomo’s return. But some progressive candidates like State Sen. Jessica Ramos are refusing to drop out and have even backed Cuomo themselves. This split could help the moderate side, similar to the last election when Eric Adams won because the left couldn’t agree on one candidate.
Early voting has started, and the final decision will be made on June 24. The progressive push comes with promises of free government-run services, steeper taxes, and a different direction for the city.
Wyatt Matters
Folks in the heartland know promises of big city socialism always sound good on paper, but it’s the everyday families and job creators who end up paying for it. If the radicals win, they’ll use New York as a proving ground for their costly experiments. We ought to keep a close watch—what happens there could come knocking on our door next.
