January 1, Florida’s COVID-19 Cases Rise 948% in Two Weeks
Florida saw a 948% increase in COVID-19 cases in just two weeks as the omicron variant drives a nationwide surge of infections.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the seven-day average for patients hospitalized with COVID-19 spiked over 40% in the week between Christmas and New Year’s Eve.
Airlines canceled thousands of flights amid covid-induced staffing shortages. Last week, America set a new record for COVID-19 infections reported in one day.
Still, some experts believe the omicron surge will “ultimately represent a move toward normalcy, where COVID-19 becomes a long-term reality but causes less devastation,” The Guardian reported.
“I think it’s likely that we’ll see this wave come and go and that the spring and summer will look a lot better than right now looks to us,” said Ofer Levy, director of the Precision Vaccines Program at Boston Children’s hospital.
“There will be fewer cases, and then again, next fall and winter we’ll see a spike of viral illnesses, coronaviruses, influenza, and others, but that it’ll be more like an endemic cycle.”
