Wyatt’s Take

  • The Dallas Wings used their top pick on Azzi Fudd to reunite her with teammate Paige Bueckers.
  • Some critics questioned the move, while Fudd’s Connecticut resume showed why she was a worthy selection.
  • Team officials quickly shut down questions about the players’ relationship during a press conference.

Things turned sour at a recent press conference when a reporter asked how the pair handles being both teammates and a couple.

Team officials rushed to kill the question before the players could even speak.

The Wings are treating a public relationship like a state secret, which only creates more drama for the fans.

When players choose to make their private lives public on social media, they cannot expect total silence from the press.

I’m wondering if that’s still the case, and if so, if y’all have talked to other couples in the league about how they negotiate that dynamic as pro teammates?

“I understand why you have to ask that question, but we’re going to respectfully decline from commenting on our players’ personal lives.”

Protecting players is fine, but shutting down a professional question about team chemistry makes the organization look defensive.

The league is growing fast, and these stars need to be ready for the spotlight that comes with a bigger paycheck.

Middle America values hard work and accountability over scripted PR moves and corporate protection.

If these athletes want to be treated like professionals, they should be allowed to answer for themselves on the court and off.

Wyatt Matters

Normal folks believe in professional boundaries, but they also value transparency when stars put their own lives on display.

Trying to control the narrative through corporate muzzling usually backfires in the Heartland.

The Dallas Wings organization has a lengthy history of being dysfunctional. They seem to always have the number one or one of the top five in the draft. One year they had five in the first round. In spite of that annual infusion of talent, they continue to be one of the worst teams in the league. Avoiding questions on the sexual relationship between two players is just the tip of their iceberg.
