January 1, Japanese Pitcher Makes MLB History in Stunning Team Triumph

Wyatt’s Take
- Houston Astros complete first MLB no-hitter since 2024 with a dominant 9-0 shutout victory over Texas Rangers
- Japanese import Tatsuya Imai leads historic pitching performance in his debut season, proving America still rewards excellence and hard work
- Three-pitcher combination delivers old-school baseball excellence while Rangers can’t manage a single hit
The Houston Astros delivered a masterclass in pitching dominance Monday night, shutting down the Texas Rangers without allowing a single hit in a commanding 9-0 victory. It’s the kind of performance that reminds us why baseball remains America’s pastime.
Tatsuya Imai started the game and threw six solid innings before handing things off to relievers Steven Okert and Alimber Santa, who kept the Rangers completely baffled at the plate. This marks the first no-hitter in Major League Baseball since September 2024, when Shota Imanaga and two Chicago Cubs relievers combined to blank the Pittsburgh Pirates 12-0.
The last time a single pitcher threw a complete-game no-hitter was August 2024, when Blake Snell held the Cincinnati Reds hitless. This win represents the 17th regular-season no-hitter in Astros history and the fourth achieved through a combined effort.
Houston also threw a no-hitter during the 2022 World Series when four pitchers combined against Philadelphia. That championship pedigree showed up again Monday night.
Imai got 16 consecutive outs over his final 16 batters faced, settling into a dominant rhythm after a shaky start. He walked three of his first four batters but got bailed out by a double play in the first inning before finding his groove.
Okert took over in the seventh after Imai’s impressive performance. Santa made his big-league debut in the eighth and immediately looked like he belonged, retiring all six batters he faced with confidence and precision.
Santa’s 24th pitch sealed the deal—a called third strike against Brandon Nimmo that ended the game after an ABS challenge by the batter confirmed the strike call. That’s how you make an entrance to the majors.
The Rangers have now been held without a hit six times in franchise history. The last time came on May 19, 2021, when Corey Kluber threw a no-hitter against them while pitching for the New York Yankees.
The 28-year-old Imai is enjoying his first big-league season after coming over from Japan, where he built an impressive resume. He joined the Astros in January after agreeing to a $54 million, three-year contract.
Imai was a three-time All-Star during eight seasons in Japan and went 10-5 with a 1.92 ERA last season for the Pacific League’s Seibu Lions. He’s proving that talent and work ethic translate across any ocean.
Wyatt Matters
This is what happens when teams invest in real talent instead of woke virtue signaling. The Astros brought over a proven winner from Japan, and he’s delivering exactly what they paid for—championship-caliber pitching. No participation trophies here, just three guys doing their jobs at the highest level. That’s the kind of excellence working Americans understand and respect.
