January 1, Cubs Star Caught on Camera Confronting Teammate After Near-Disaster at Home Plate

Wyatt’s Take

  • Pete Crow-Armstrong scored the game-tying run but nearly got thrown out because his teammate failed to signal properly
  • Hot-mic moment caught PCA letting rookie Matt Shaw know he needs to step up his on-deck responsibilities
  • Cubs rallied for a dramatic walk-off win, extending their winning streak to six games despite the baserunning scare

Pete Crow-Armstrong tied the game for the Chicago Cubs in the bottom of the ninth Monday night, but the play nearly turned into a disaster thanks to a teammate’s confusion.

With Chicago trailing the Cincinnati Reds 4-3 in the final inning, Crow-Armstrong led off with a triple. Nico Hoerner followed with a fly ball to left field with one out.

Crow-Armstrong, one of the fastest players in baseball, was waved home on what became a sacrifice fly. He crossed the plate standing up, but should have slid — he was nearly thrown out at home.

In that situation, the player in the on-deck circle has one job: tell the runner whether to slide or stay standing. That responsibility fell to rookie Matt Shaw, who apparently didn’t deliver.

Cameras caught the aftermath in the dugout. Crow-Armstrong got animated with Shaw, making it clear his signaling wasn’t nearly loud or decisive enough.

This wasn’t a screaming match or disrespect. PCA was teaching a second-year player a hard lesson — be bold and clear when a teammate’s safety and the game are on the line.

Shaw didn’t get a chance to redeem himself at the plate. Manager Craig Counsell pinch-hit Michael Conforto for him instead.

That move paid off immediately.

“Conforto launched a fastball to left-center field for the walk-off home run to extend the Cubs’ winning streak to six games with a 5-4 victory.”

It was Conforto’s first home run of the season, and the timing couldn’t have been better.

The Cubs have been on fire lately. Since April 14, they’ve won 16 of their last 19 games. Yet somehow, they only hold a two-game lead in the National League Central standings.

Why It Matters

This is baseball the way it’s supposed to be played — veterans holding young players accountable, not coddling them. Shaw got a lesson he won’t forget, and the Cubs got a win that keeps their playoff hopes alive. It’s about doing your job, supporting your teammates, and understanding that in competition, details matter. That’s a value Americans understand at every kitchen table across the heartland.
