January 1, WATCH: Sheriff Arrested After Allegedly Punching Girl at High School Basketball Game
A Kentucky sheriff was charged with assault for allegedly punching a teenage girl at a high school basketball game.
Owsley County Sheriff Brent Lynch is one of Owsley County High School’s coaches and intervened after a fight broke out during a girls’ basketball game at Perry County Central High School on Dec. 3.
Kentucky State Trooper Matthew Gayheart said Lynch rushed the floor during the fight and struck a Perry County Central player while breaking up the altercation.
Following an investigation, a warrant was issued for Lynch on a fourth-degree assault charge. An Owsley County sheriff’s deputy arrested Lynch two days later, and he was booked into the Three Forks Regional Jail in Lee County.
Owsley County Schools Superintendent Tim Bobrowski said Lynch was suspended for one game, and both teams have suspended four student-athletes for two games.
If convicted, the 47-year-old faces up to a year in prison.
