January 1, Vermont Officials Clash Over Riot Charges After Police Attack

Wyatt’s Take

  • Vermont prosecutors declined to charge six people after a March protest turned violent.
  • Police say officers were punched, windows were shattered, and vehicles were damaged.
  • State officials defended the decision, while law enforcement leaders warned it sends the wrong message.

Sarah George released a statement defending her decision to drop the cases for those with no prior records.

“So to charge these six individuals with no criminal records, and expect that they bear the burden of all the harm caused that day — is not something I was interested in our office being a part of.”

The Burlington Police Department pushed back, noting that attacking officers is not protected speech.

“Engaging in physical confrontations with law enforcement in the street is not protected speech or expressive conduct under the First Amendment.”

Public safety leaders Jennifer Morrison and Matthew Birmingham warned that criminals now feel they can act without fear of consequences.

“Individuals at the Dorset Street incident repeatedly stated that State’s Attorney George would not prosecute them for their behavior that day. It turns out they were right.”

Wyatt Matters

Middle Americans know that a country without borders or laws is no country at all. When prosecutors prioritize radicals over the safety of our police, it destroys the foundation of justice our communities rely on.

Legal system at work again….not a justice system. Many people have “no criminal records” UNTIL they do. If they actually rioted and caused damages they should “bear the burden of the harm that day”. Or send the message a get out of jail free card is very possible when you riot……doesn’t this set a precedent?

When they are put in by Sores, they are not going to charge anyone no matter what they did. It’s a do what you want free card.
