The WNBA is front and center in the betting market today, but not for the reasons anyone hoped. If you’ve been following the sport, there have been some genuinely great stories unfolding on the court. If you haven’t been following, you’re probably only hearing about the constant negativity.

We had one player posting about white privilege. We had another talking about transgender athletes. Both discussions pull focus away from the actual product on the court, which is a shame because there’s real talent worth watching.

Let’s get back to what matters by focusing on the Wings versus Fever matchup and finding some value in the betting lines.

The Dallas Wings were expected to make marked improvement this season, and so far they’ve delivered. Before the year started, many took the over on their win total, and with just three more wins needed and 10 games remaining, that bet looks solid. They have seven home games left, positioning them as favorites in most of those contests.

The bad news is Dallas is playing some of their worst basketball of the season right now. They’re just 1-5 over their past six games and 3-6 over their past nine. Much of this struggle stems from injuries to key players.

Azzi Fudd has been out, along with Alysha Clark and Jessica Shepard. Losing Shepard, their leading rebounder, has had a significant impact. Most should return either for this game or soon after.

Even without full strength, Paige Bueckers remains the focal point of this team. Arike Ogunbowale serves as the other primary scorer, and she’s put together a solid campaign.

The Indiana Fever continue to command all the attention, and it’s not hard to understand why. They have the most popular player on the planet on their roster, and as a result, opposing teams consistently bring their best effort against Indiana. This spotlight should theoretically make the Fever better, but it can also be draining to face everyone’s maximum effort every single night.

There’s more than enough talent on this team for Indiana to compete with anyone in the league.

Recently, much of the attention has shifted off Clark and onto teammate Kelsey Cunningham, who made controversial comments about transgender athletes. Later, she was flagrantly fouled by Dijionai Carrington, who then sent out a message about white privilege on social media.

Their coach, Stephanie White, somewhat defended Carrington’s play, which is understandable from a coaching perspective. But the whole situation has become a mess, and honestly the WNBA should become a public relations case study on what not to do. It seems like none of these players have received basic media training.

All this drama masks an important fact: the Fever are playing solid basketball right now. They’re a legitimate playoff team coming together at exactly the right time. Off-court distractions can leak into the locker room and become real problems.

The Wings don’t have those same distractions and are getting healthy at just the right moment. Dallas getting their players back could position them to make a strong run and build momentum heading into the postseason.

Most will view this matchup as a straight battle between Clark and Bueckers.

Clark is great—full stop. She can shoot, she’s fan-friendly, she’s a really good passer. All of that is true. However, she does turn the ball over far too much, and that has to be cleaned up. She also complains quite a bit to officials.

Bueckers is the better overall player right now. There’s nothing she can’t do on the court. If you traded these two straight up, Dallas probably isn’t worse off, but Indiana likely gets better. That doesn’t necessarily mean Dallas wins this particular game.

Indiana is playing well at home and has more continuity and momentum at the moment. Dallas simply has too many players still working their way back from injury. This will likely be a close battle, but the smart money is on the Fever to cover the short spread.

Why It Matters

Women’s sports deserve better than constant political drama drowning out genuine athletic achievement. These players have worked their entire lives to reach this level, and fans who just want to watch great basketball shouldn’t have to wade through culture war nonsense to enjoy the game. Let the talent speak for itself, and leave the divisive politics at the door.
