Wyatt’s Take

  • Cherfilus-McCormick resigned just before she faced an expulsion hearing.
  • The House Ethics Committee had already raised serious campaign finance concerns.
  • She filed for reelection days before stepping away from office.

Another career politician in Washington has been caught red-handed allegedly raiding taxpayer funds meant for disaster victims.

This isn’t just a lapse in judgment; it’s a betrayal of every hardworking American who pays their taxes.

Florida Democrat Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick stepped down from her seat this week while facing intense scrutiny over her personal finances.

The House Ethics Committee was ready to recommend punishment for the misuse of disaster relief money.

Instead of facing the music, she quit to stop the committee’s authority over her.

However, the legal trouble is far from over for the former congresswoman.

A Miami grand jury indicted her in November for allegedly stealing $5 million from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

This money was supposedly funneled through companies to fill her own campaign coffers.

This was not a fair process, Cherfilus-McCormick claimed in a press release defending her actions.

I simply cannot stand by and allow my due process rights to be trampled on, and my good name to be tarnished, she continued.

Even though she is out of office, records show she filed her candidacy for the next term just a week before resigning.

It seems some politicians think they can treat the public trust like a personal ATM and then ask for another turn at the wheel.

Wyatt Matters

Middle America is tired of seeing relief money meant for families in need end up in the pockets of D.C. insiders.
