Wyatt’s Take

  • A hardworking Wisconsin mom spotted a century-old tugboat wreck in Lake Superior that most folks never get to see.
  • Clear water and family time revealed a piece of local history that connects regular people to their roots.
  • The story shows how simple days outdoors can uncover heritage that brings communities together.

A Wisconsin mother was spending time at the beach with her young son when the two spotted something few visitors ever see.

The water at Camp Amnicon along Lake Superior was unusually clear, giving Hannah Damon a rare look at the A.H. Pitz, a steam tugboat abandoned in 1951.

“We started seeing beams and cables and this massive pipe, and it was like, wait a minute, this is a shipwreck, this is a shipwreck,” Damon told Fox News Digital.

Damon said she rushed to grab her camera and warned her son not to splash while she captured the discovery.

“I ran back to shore and I got my camera, and I was like, OK, you are not allowed to splash me, this is a really exciting discovery,” she recalled.

The tugboat, built in 1923, now sits fully underwater and is usually hidden by the clay-rich water that normally clouds the shoreline.

Damon told Fox News Digital that the wreck had been intentionally sunk decades ago to help hold a sandbar in place.

“Even after swimming here and being on this particular beach for 10 or 11 years in a row, I had just never actually seen the shipwreck before,” she said.

Her video spread on social media and drew comments from longtime locals who remembered seeing the vessel as far back as 1967.

“It was probably the closest thing to ‘viral’ the Camp Amnicon has ever experienced,” Damon said.

She believes the shared memory of the old tugboat helps tie the community to its past.

“I think that’s the cool thing about archaeology and history and local culture, that this kind of stuff can bring us together,” she said.
