The Alaska state House of Representatives voted 35-1 to censure Republican Rep. David Eastman over his remarks. Eastman was the only dissenting vote.

The formal rebuking came after comments made by the GOP lawmaker during a Monday House Judiciary Committee hearing about adverse childhood experiences, i.e. physical or sexual abuse, and how they can negatively impact a person for the rest of their lives.

During the hearing, experts testified about the longterm effects of child abuse. At one point, Eastman said he'd heard an argument "on occasion" that when child abuse is fatal, it could be "a benefit to society."

Eastman asked the testifier: “How would you respond to the argument that I have heard on occasion where, in the case where child abuse is fatal, obviously it’s not good for the child, but it’s actually a benefit to society because there aren’t needs for government services and whatnot over the whole course of that child’s life?”

The person testifying, Trevor Storrs, president and CEO of the Alaska Children’s Trust, responded: "Can you say that again? Did you say, 'a benefit for society?'"

“It gets argued periodically that it’s actually a cost savings because that child is not going to need any of those government services that they might otherwise be entitled to receive and need based on growing up in this type of environment,” Eastman responded.

"I'm not even sure how to answer that, that there’s a cost saving to the death of a child," Storrs said. "The impact that that has on a family and us as a society when a child is lost, especially to child abuse and neglect, is unmeasurable."

Rep. Andrew Gray, a Democrat who introduced the motion to censure, said Eastman should be censured over "offensive, insulting and unsubstantiated statements that undermine the dignity of the House."

Leaders of the GOP-led House majority caucus hasn't yet discussed whether Eastman will be punished over the comments.

I’m not sure what Eastman was thinking with his question, but how is it different from the left’s (Democrat) argument that abortion is good for society because it results in one less child needing services. It is destructive that our society no longer places value on human life. Look at Canada encouraging their elderly and seriously ill to consider assisted suicide so as not to be an economic burden on the country. Western “Culture” has become a culture of pure narcissism. It is perverse and disgusting.

I believe you misunderstood what he was referring to. I believe he was not advocating that abused children be eliminated, but rather what the witness believed in that controversial position held by some “experts”.

Perhaps his question was badly worded. But please reply to me if you believe I have a wrong interpretation.

I agree with your statement. I feel that he had the right to ask that question since he referenced that he’d heard that said, or possibly seen in writing. It seems to be a legitimate question, as far as I’m concerned. I think I may have seen that same thought somewhere in the past. I may even actually be true — even though heartbreaking to think that someone would use that to try to “justify” the death of a child.

First off, I’ll say, while in the military, I was a resident of Alaska and had a child born there. I must agree with Rep. Eastman’s asking a controversial question. In our modern social environment. Do progressives advocate for more elimination of children other than for the obvious issues regarding abortion on demand for any reason? I, as I believe he does, am against such depravity. Yet, he’s likely to be punished for daring to ask the question. Such is how low our nation and States have sunk.
