January 1, Bruce Springsteen’s Wife Reveals Six-Year Battle with Blood Cancer Amid E Street Band Tour
Bruce Springsteen’s wife, Patti Scialfa, has courageously revealed that she’s been silently battling a blood cancer for the last six years, without letting it derail her support and involvement in Springsteen’s legendary acts.
At the recent Toronto Film Festival premiere of Springsteen’s documentary, “Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band,” Scialfa made the courageous announcement that she was diagnosed with multiple myeloma back in 2018. This type of cancer forms in plasma cells—a critical component of the body’s immune system.
Due to her health concerns, Scialfa understandably had to step back from the E Street Band’s hectic touring schedule, which began in February 2023 and is projected to run until July 2025.
“Touring has become a challenge for me,” Scialfa admits in the documentary, as quoted by the Associated Press. “This affects my immune system, so I just have to be careful what I choose to do and where I choose to go.”
In the face of this personal battle, Scialfa occasionally makes brief appearances. “Every once in a while, I come to a show or two and I can sing a few songs on stage, and that’s been a treat. That’s the new normal for me right now, and I’m OK with that,” she added.
Scialfa has been a dedicated member of the E Street Band since 1984 and has been married to Springsteen since 1991. She received her cancer diagnosis during Springsteen’s “Springsteen on Broadway” residency.
In previous interviews, Patti mentioned stepping back from the tour, but without disclosing that it was due to her health. Instead, she cited wanting to spend time with her grandchild. In a 2023 interview with the Asbury Park Press, she emphasized a different reason: “I didn’t feel as needed in a way because there were a lot of musicians on stage… I took that opportunity to do my own record.”
Meanwhile, Bruce Springsteen himself hasn’t been spared from health troubles. Persistent issues have plagued him since last summer when a painful peptic ulcer forced the postponement of his tour. It didn’t stop there; doctor’s orders continually disrupt his performance schedule, highlighting the serious toll that a rock-and-roll lifestyle can take even on the most enduring legends.
Following a distressing postponement in Marseille due to vocal issues, further medical consultations mandated a break, leading to additional concert delays in Prague and Milan. Fans eagerly await updates on rescheduled dates, underscoring the immense global anticipation and unwavering support for Springsteen and the E Street Band. Despite these setbacks, Bruce is recuperating comfortably and remains optimistic about resuming their wildly successful European tour, starting June 12 in Madrid.
