January 1, Mail delivery about to get slower, more expensive
Start planning now: mail delivery is about to get slower and more expensive. Starting Friday, the US Postal Service will “implement new service standards” and slow its target delivery time by approximately 30 percent for first-class mail and periodicals.
USPS spokesperson Kim Frum said the upcoming changes will increase time for cross-country mail delivery and other long distances. However, she claimed that the changes will not affect 61% of first-class mail and 93% of periodicals.
First-class packages will experience the new delays starting Friday.
Also, starting Oct. 3, the USPS will temporarily increase prices on “commercial and retail domestic packages” due to the holiday season, Frum said. The increased rates will last until Dec. 26.
The USPS reported a loss of $3 billion for the quarter ending June 30.
